Chemical Free - Foaming Hand/Face/Body Wash!

Making a foaming hand soap/face wash/body wash!

This is such a great way to monitor the chemicals coming into contact with the largest organ on your body - the skin!

Use an 8oz foaming pump container
1/4 - 1/3 cup of Castile Soap
1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin
1 tablespoon grapeseed oil (or your favorite carrier oil)
15 drops of the essential oils of your choice
Top off with tap water
Shake before each use

Buy some foaming pump containers and a few simple ingredients and replace your old hand soaps today!  Put one at each sink.  Bonus - if you want to wash your face quickly, just use the same soap!  Not too harsh either!  And bring it with you in the shower too for your very own body wash!  Switch up the essential oils to target different conditions - dry hands, blemishes, cleanliness and even just wanting a new scent!

Chemical Free! - DIY Toothpaste!

A while back I began investigating fluoride & decided that it just wasn't worth it for me to keep using toothpaste with fluoride. (I encourage you to research it on your own too.) I also began learning about the benefits of coconut oil on your oral health. So when I discovered Young Living Essential Oils, it was natural for me to want to make my own toothpaste! Who knew it was so easy?!?!?!

Here's what I used this time to fill my 1/4 cup jar:
About 4 tablespoons of coconut oil (almost 1/4 cup)
2 tablespoons of baking soda
10 drops of Thieves Essential Oil (to fight all those germs in my mouth)
10 drops of Orange Essential Oil (to help whiten my teeth)
Here's how I did it:
Softened the coconut oil a little (it's winter so it stays harder, but in the warmer months you probably don't have to soften beforehand).
Mix the coconut oil and baking soda together in a small bowl with a fork.
Add the essential oils of your liking and mix well with the fork.
Scoop into the toothpaste into the jar & you're done!
Here's how I use my jar of toothpaste:
Using my toothbrush as the spoon, scoop about a kidney bean size of toothpaste onto your toothbrush.
No need to wet it before brushing.
Brush teeth as normal.
Run plenty of water when spitting to ensure all the stuff gets rinsed down the drain.
Side notes:
It is a bit salty tasting, esp if this is your first time brushing with baking soda! You can always add more coconut oil if you need to tone down the saltiness. But it leaves my teeth feeling smooth & clean all day!
Or YL has a Thieves based toothpaste, but for now I'm liking making my own. Super affordable! And I can play with different flavors!  I have tried Orange and Peppermint before - I really liked the Peppermint, and I've just done Thieves before.  Next time maybe I'll do Thieves and Peppermint! Or maybe I'll try Spearmint or Clove!  So many options!  Especially with the new Young Living Vitality Line of Dietary Essential Oils - its easy to figure out which oils are suitable for ingestion.

CHEMICAL FREE! - SCRUB THAT TUB! & SPRINKLE ON THE CARPET?

This Thursday's Chemical Free post is another DIY home made cleaning product.  This is one of the first things that I used my Young Living Essential Oils for when I purchased them!  I was so impressed by the cleaning power of the oils that I wanted to just clean and clean!  These days I'm not jumping at the opportunity to clean, but when I do clean, I love it!  The results are awesome and that always makes me feel good!

Surprisingly, or not if you're familiar with essential oils, a little bit of essential oil goes a LONG way!  I have used more drops of the oils in the past, but have gotten what seemed to be the same result as when I use less.  I like to conserve, get the most out of my oils, so I do a little essential oil and most baking soda.  Here is how I make my powdered concoction and how I use it!

Powdered Scrub Recipe
  1. In a bowl, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with 3 drops of Thieves Essential Oil
  2. Whisk with fork to break up clumps of essential oils
  3. Pour into jar of your choice, or use directly from bowl (If transferring from a bowl to a smaller jar, I will use a funnel to minimize the mess.)
  4. In the same bowl (now empty) mix another 1/4 cup of baking soda with 3 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
  5. Repeat Steps 2-3
  6. Continue alternating 1/4 cup of baking soda with Thieves EO and 1/4 cup of baking soda with Lemon EO until you have made the desired amount.
Directions for Use - Scrubbing, Cleaning, Whitening applications
  1. Dampen the surface that is in need of a scrub, could be a stain on the couch or carpet, the tub or shower, a pot or pan or even the vinyl interior of the boat!  (Of course it is always best to test a small section first, but I have not seen any color fading using this recipe.)
  2. Sprinkle a light layer of the Powdered Scrub onto the surface that is to be cleaned.
  3.  Scrub with scrubber of your choice depending upon the material you are scrubbing.  For example, I will use an abrasive cleaning pad for scrubbing pots and pans, the same for tile shower floors and for the vinyl boat interior I used a scrub brush with bristles to get into the creases and grooves.
  4. Rinse well with clean water.
  5. You may need to add more depending on how tough the dirt/grime/stain has set.
  6. It may be beneficial to use this in conjunction with the Thieves EO and Water cleaning solution or Thieves Household Cleaner and Water solution that I wrote about HERE.
Directions for Use - Carpet/Rug Deodorizer
  1. Sprinkle desired amount over carpet and rug areas to be treated.  A light coating is normally sufficient.  (Of course it is always best to test a small section first, especially with a dark carpet or rug, but I have not seen any color fading using this recipe.)
  2. For areas of special concern, potty training accident location (human or animal), etc., apply more generously to the spot and gently rub the powder down into the carpet.
  3. Let the powder sit for about 15 minutes.
  4. For basic deodorizing, vacuum powder up and you're done!
  5. For areas of special concern, after the powder has sat on the spot for a while you can rub/scrub the carpet with a damp cloth or scrub brush.
  6. Let area of special concern dry before vacuuming.
  7. Let me just say that I spent this summer and early fall potty training my third child.  She was a handful!  So stubborn!  I may have forgotten to come back and scrub the accident spot after applying the powder a couple different times - did I mention she was #3 and there is always something pressing needing my attention?  Upon drying, or realizing that I didn't go back and scrub, I smelled the spot and could not detect a urine scent at all!
Thieves is by far my favorite Young Living Essential Oil!  You can use it in so many different ways, but knowing that it is an amazing cleaner and can be mixed with other all natural products to create chemical free cleaners to use around the house, kids and pets is what really wins me over, time and time again!  EVERYONE needs Thieves Essential Oil!!!

Let me know what you think of this powdered scrub!

Chemical Free! - Containers for Success!

Starting now, Thursday blog posts will (usually) be dedicated to helping you make chemical free choices in your every day life.  But before I begin providing you with DIY tips on how to make chemical free cleaners, air fresheners, pesticide sprays, relaxing roller ball blends, etc, I want to tell you about the types of containers that you should obtain so that you are ready to rock and roll as soon as I post my first tip or as soon as you receive your oils!

When I first acquired my Premium Starter Kit, I did not have any of the appropriate bottles or containers to start mixing up concoctions and maximizing the potential of my essential oils.  I wasn't sure what to get or how much to spend.  Finally after going around and around and spending WAY TOO much time researching, I decided to buy in bulk.  Yes, there was a greater upfront cost than just buying exactly what I needed, but I won't be buying bottles again for a long time and the price per bottle was great!  I hope to give many away during monthly promotions or as hostess gifts to those hosting Essential Oils 101 Classes or use them for DIY teacher appreciation gifts, etc.

I went with all glass bottles and jars.  Essential Oils derived from Citrus fruits, such as Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit and Tangerine, can eat away at regular plastic and cause plastic residue to pollute your essential oil creations!  That's not good!  So I play it safe and mainly use glass containers - which are all very reusable.

Glass containers can be found in numerous colors.  I found Clear (of course), Amber, Cobalt Blue, Purple and Green options.  Clear is not recommended because there isn't any shield from the Sun's rays and the sunlight can break down the oils.  It is always best to use darker colored containers when feasible AND to store your creations in a dark cabinet/closet.  Pay attention when purchasing your glass containers so you know whether or not you are buying "painted" or "frosted" glass or real colored glass.  The painted and frosted glass containers may may lose their color over time.  That color may fade or the paint may flake off or come off on your hands making a mess.

There seem to be pretty standard sizes for bottle and jars used in DIY essential oil creations.

16 oz glass bottles can be used for water and essential oil cleaning sprays.  I went with a chemical resistant sprayer (which cost more than the bottle itself!) and a cap so the sprayer can be removed/taken out if desired or if the product isn't going to be used for a long time.

4 oz and 2 oz glass bottles can be used for air fresheners, linen sprays, facial toners, shampoo, conditioner, etc.  The 2 oz bottle would be perfect for traveling, especially if you're flying and don't want to check a bag.  I bought fine mist sprayers for both AND caps.  There are also more squirt type sprayers available that can pass a thicker substance - think face lotion dispensers.

15 ml glass roller top bottles with metal roller balls are perfect for making your own blends of essential and carrier oils for topical applications.  These bottles fit easily in your purse, diaper bag, brief case, pocket, etc, making them super easy to carry around with you all the time for quick, on the go needs  Make sure you are looking for "metal" roller balls.  You don't want to have to worry about your citrus oil blend ruining your plastic roller ball.  The metal balls roll smoothly - and tickle the heck out my kids' feet!!!

8 oz glass jars are just the right size for powdered cleaners, body butters, bath salts, etc.  I went with Ball jars as most are made in the USA and I feel like I have a connection with the Ball family since I attended Ball State University!!!  They are a great, versatile jar and can be found quite affordably in the canning section of most big box retailers.  I found mine at Meijer.

4 oz glass jars are useful for when you want to make a small portion of a recipe for yourself or to gift samples to friends, family, teachers, coworkers, etc.  The 4 oz jars are also Ball jars.  Yes, the 8 oz and 4 oz jars are clear glass, but colored glass jars are hard to find at a reasonable price.  Just be sure to store these out of the direct sunlight and preferably in a dark cabinet or drawer.

A few useful non-container items that I would recommend purchasing are a funnel (or funnels) and glass eye droppers.  I decided on the metal funnels and the glass eye droppers for the same reasons that I decided on the glass containers and metal roller balls - the fear that the citrus oils could corrode the plastic.  The funnel is great for pouring larger bottles of liquid into the much smaller containers.  The eye droppers are useful in transferring the exact amount of essential or carrier oil drops from the original bottles into capsules, roller bottles or other containers.  I purchased them on-line at a retailer who stated that the smaller eye dropper would fit on a Young Living 5 ml bottle and that the larger eye dropper would fit on a Young Living 15 ml bottle.  They did!  Some people have a lot of droppers and use one on almost every oil!  I mainly use my droppers when making capsules.  (More on capsules later...)

I hope that now you aren't as overwhelmed with what sort of containers to buy when you are thinking about all of the possible DIY Essential Oil Creations!  Does anyone have any other recommendations for must have containers when just getting started using essential oils???  I'd love to hear from you!
