Chemical Free! - DIY Toothpaste!

A while back I began investigating fluoride & decided that it just wasn't worth it for me to keep using toothpaste with fluoride. (I encourage you to research it on your own too.) I also began learning about the benefits of coconut oil on your oral health. So when I discovered Young Living Essential Oils, it was natural for me to want to make my own toothpaste! Who knew it was so easy?!?!?!

Here's what I used this time to fill my 1/4 cup jar:
About 4 tablespoons of coconut oil (almost 1/4 cup)
2 tablespoons of baking soda
10 drops of Thieves Essential Oil (to fight all those germs in my mouth)
10 drops of Orange Essential Oil (to help whiten my teeth)
Here's how I did it:
Softened the coconut oil a little (it's winter so it stays harder, but in the warmer months you probably don't have to soften beforehand).
Mix the coconut oil and baking soda together in a small bowl with a fork.
Add the essential oils of your liking and mix well with the fork.
Scoop into the toothpaste into the jar & you're done!
Here's how I use my jar of toothpaste:
Using my toothbrush as the spoon, scoop about a kidney bean size of toothpaste onto your toothbrush.
No need to wet it before brushing.
Brush teeth as normal.
Run plenty of water when spitting to ensure all the stuff gets rinsed down the drain.
Side notes:
It is a bit salty tasting, esp if this is your first time brushing with baking soda! You can always add more coconut oil if you need to tone down the saltiness. But it leaves my teeth feeling smooth & clean all day!
Or YL has a Thieves based toothpaste, but for now I'm liking making my own. Super affordable! And I can play with different flavors!  I have tried Orange and Peppermint before - I really liked the Peppermint, and I've just done Thieves before.  Next time maybe I'll do Thieves and Peppermint! Or maybe I'll try Spearmint or Clove!  So many options!  Especially with the new Young Living Vitality Line of Dietary Essential Oils - its easy to figure out which oils are suitable for ingestion.

Chemical Free! - Stress...

So I was at the dermatologist for my annual skin check - we go yearly to check for possible skin cancer spots.  If something were to ever show up I want to catch it as soon as possible!  We got to talking about what I could do for my atopic dermatitis, aka dry skin, aka dandruff.  Then she made a profound statement...

Background...
I have pretty much always had skin issues.  I remember as a young child vacationing in Three Lakes, WI and getting this awful, itchy rash all over my torso!  It was so uncomfortable and happened every year that we went up there, which was every year!  In college my skin issues shifted away from my torso and to the inside of my upper arms.  Wearing short sleeves in the warmer/water ski season was unsightly!  Then after having my first child the skin issues spread to my upper legs.  My thighs, bottom and inside of upper arms were a mess and wearing shorts and short sleeves in the warmer weather was embarrassing!  To top it off, my scalp started flaking and my hands would crack and bleed all winter!  Skin issues all year round...

Believe me when I say that I have tried a lot of things.  Yes, the steroid creams work, but I need to stay on them all the time and you can't when you are pregnant or breastfeeding.  I have since also realized that it is not good to put all those synthetic chemicals on your body.

I've gone through allergy testing and have talked to a dietitian.  I am allergic to a lot of things, but I have also been able to eliminate many of those allergens from my environment.  The dietitian didn't think that my plant-based diet was triggering my skin issues.

So what gives???

My dermatologist agreed that your whole body and all your systems are linked.  So yes, food or allergens that our bodies come into contact with could trigger skin issues.  Leading an overall healthy life by eliminating chemicals from the environment, eating right, exercising regularly and sleeping an appropriate number of hours each night may still leave you with skin issues!

STRESS may be a major underlying factor to all sorts of ailments!  Everyone's body processes stress differently.  I had never made that connection!  I kept thinking that I could change my diet enough and that would provide me with relief.  Of course that got me thinking - maybe I need to de-stress more!

Implementation...

Using more Stress Away Essential Oil topically and diffusing that and other calming essential oil blends (see graphic above) may help me lower my stress levels too.  I should probably start putting some Stress Away in my water as it can be used as a dietary supplement too!  Since exercise is key in helping to release stress, I also need to focus on getting myself back into shape and taking care of myself.

Instead of turning to topical steroids, I'm going to continue searching for more holistic approaches to managing my atopic dermatitis.  The diffuser will be running more frequently in the rooms where I spend large chunks of time and I'm planning on heading to the local gym!  If nothing else, I'll be healthier, I'll feel better about myself and will be a less stressed mom.  Now the thought of THAT makes me sooo happy!!!

Do you have a favorite stress buster?  If so, please share!

Let's Learn! - What I've Learned about Essential Oils in 2015 and What's in Store for 2016!

To put it mildly, 2015 has been a year of changes for my family!  Specifically, I discovered essential oils (not sure why it took me so long!) and watched "Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret".  2015 has been an eye-opening year and 2016 looks as though what has been set in motion in 2015 will continue!

I happened upon essential oils mid year.  For quite some time I had been trying to use the "greenest" cleaning products that I could find in the stores, I was using fragrance free detergents and keeping my eyes and ears open for new products that were not potentially harmful for my family but yet were effective.  A friend (and now a business colleague) had been posting about essential oils and when I was approached by another multi-level marketing company about a different product line, it made me reach out to my essential oils friend and I started asking questions.  As I began learning more about essential oils, I began doing my own independent research on them.  Needless to say, I was impressed with what I discovered and could not wait to get my hands on my very own set of essential oils!  (Read my Essential Oils Page to find out what Essential Oils are, why I choose to use Young Living Essential Oils and what the various purchasing options are.)

11 essential oils come in the Young Living Premium Starter Kit with diffuser.  Here is how I use each one of the 11 essential oils every day:

Lavender - I love the smell of a little Lavender EO!  Too much Lavender can be overwhelming!  (It is important to remember that with all essential oils, a little goes a long ways!)  I like to wear it under my arms as a natural deodorant!  When my children or I have a runny nose a little Lavender EO helps slow it down.

Peppermint - Peppermint EO in my water in the afternoons gives me a natural boost, it is especially useful when I'm going to be driving in the car for long stretches and need to stay alert.  I also use it on my children to help open them up so that they breath better before going to bed.  Peppermint EO also repels spiders!  During the warmer weather, I spray Peppermint EO around the doors and windows and spiders stay away.  Such a great alternative to scary pesticides!  I don't have to worry about my children's health when using Peppermint EO around them, like I would with the traditional pesticides.

Lemon - I mix Lemon EO in my homemade cleaning products.  It fights stickiness and grime naturally!  We love cleaning our small fruits and vegetables in a big bowl of water with 1-2 drops of Lemon EO.

Copaiba - Copaiba EO can be added to many of our essential oil blends to enhance/boost the effects of many of the other essential oils.

Frankincense - I have been using Frankincense EO on my children daily to help promote health and wellness, especially since they have a tendency to cough often.

Thieves - I probably use Thieves EO the most!  I have run out of it in the past and everyone ended up sick!  Not a coincidence - I will never run out again!  I diffuse and clean with Thieves to help maintain a healthy environment and to boost wellness.  I made a spray with Thieves EO that I spray in the child sized potty after every use and I use it as an air freshener in the bathroom, garbage cans or anywhere with a funky smell!  Every night before bed I apply Thieves EO to my children's feet.  My homemade toothpaste also has Thieves EO in it!  I love putting Thieves EO in my hot tea when I'm not feeling the greatest and when a sore throat is trying to make one of us uncomfortable, a spoonful of honey with 1 drop of Thieves EO makes us feel so much better!

Purification - If I feel a blemish growing on my face, I put a tiny bit of Purification EO on it a few times during the day, or if I do mess with the blemish before applying Purification EO, the Purification EO calms it down and helps it go away quickly.  Purification EO is also great on my wool balls in my dryer.  It makes our clothes smell great naturally!

R.C. - As the weather changes and everyone is coming down with a cold, I enjoy diffusing R.C. EO with Lavender EO.  It smells amazing!  It is great for my children at night, as the R.C. blend helps open them up and the Lavender calms them.

DiGize - For me, if I start to feel sinus pressure, I reach for my DiGize EO and apply it to the flex points on my toes.  Putting it on consistently for a few days, helped relieve the pressure and kept me feeling great!  I'll also keep DiGize EO handy for the times when I may overindulge on food and or drink and my stomach is a mess.  DiGize EO settles my tummy issues quickly!

PanAway - For someone who likes to be active, and for someone who seems to always have a little ache in my neck, I need to keep my PanAway EO close!  I use it as Icy Hot on aches and pains.  It feels great on my neck and shoulders and on my hands where an old softball injury flares up as the weather changes.

Stress Away - I have three young children and taking them out in the public can occasionally be stressful.  I like to apply Stress Away EO to my wrists and neck and take some deep breaths of the aroma before entering the situation.  I keep Stress Away EO in my purse in case I need to reapply while we are out.  The smell is wonderful!

As you can see, I use my essential oils throughout the day!  My husband and children picked out a nice plastic case - similar to a tackle box, for me to put my oils in.  Now I will bringing my oils with me EVERYWHERE! They can go upstairs, downstairs, and out of town with us easily and securely!  I can whip up a solution quickly if something comes up while we are gone.  I feel so empowered using the oils!  I can finally take charge of what I am cleaning my house with and I don't have to be as reliant on over the counter medicines and prescription drugs to help my family feel good.

I am so excited to continue using Young Living Essential Oils in 2016!  I have plans on trying some different essential oils that I have not tried yet and making more products for personal and home use.  Don't worry, I'll keep you updated on my oily journey!

If you are interested in joining me on my journey and would like to find out how to get your hands on these Young Living Essential Oils check out my Essential Oils and Monthly Promotions Pages!  I'd love to help you and your family take charge of your health and wellness and reduce your dependence on synthetic chemicals!  Please let me know how I can help!

Let's Learn! - Frankincense Essential Oil!

I think that learning about Frankincense Essential Oil is quite fitting for this Christmas week!  Until learning about essential oils, I had not heard about Frankincense outside of the Bible.  Nor had I thought about Frankincense.  I guess maybe I thought it was just something from Biblical times.  BUT, when I began researching Frankincense, I was VERY surprised that it is VERY much still around and VERY useful!!!

Many of us are familiar with the Wise Men who came to visit Baby Jesus.  They saw the star appear in the sky that signified Jesus' birth and they went to find HIM.  They brought valuable and important gifts to Jesus: Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.  Bible History Daily has an explanation about why the Wise Men brought the gifts that they did.

In my research, I found that Frankincense is from the tree Boswellia carterii which is native to the Middle East and contains the naturally occurring constituent boswellic acid.  Frankincense comes in a few different forms, but the most pure and potent forms include Frankincense Resin and Frankincense Essential Oil.  The Resin is obtained by tapping the tree and collecting the Resin and letting it harden.  The Essential Oil is obtained through the distillation of the dry resin.  Young Living actually carries both the Frankincense Resin and the Frankincense EO.  More on the Resin later, as I haven't had a chance to use it yet!

Frankincense EO has a woodsy, warm, balsamic aroma. Frankincense can be diffused during meditation for grounding and purpose. Applying this oil topically may help smooth the appearance of healthy-looking skin, and is excellent to use for massage after activity.  Young Living also suggests that one can inhale Frankincense EO to spiritually refocus and one can rub Frankincense EO on the bottom of your feet to help alleviate nervous energy.

I have come to the conclusion, based upon my research, that Frankincense can and should be used for just about everything!!!  If you're feeling ill and coughing, rub some Frankincense EO on your chest with your other oils for respiratory health (like Eucalyptus and RC).  Diffuse Frankincense EO to help correct your mood and to trigger your Olfactory Region to respond.  Use Frankincense in your homemade skin care products to promote healthy skin.

Finally, PLEASE do yourself a favor and complete an on-line search of Frankincense EO, Boswellia carterii and Boswellic acid.  Look for collegiate reports and medical and/or science journal papers.  One site that has a lot of information is the National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health.  Since this is a government site, I would suspect that it would be quite biased one way or another, but I have been pleasantly surprised that the information seems to be the facts and what they report about Frankincense makes me happy!  Let's just say that I will consistently use Frankincense EO to encourage overall health and wellness, internal and external!

What is your favorite way to use Frankincense EO?

Chemical Free! - Teacher Gift Idea - Diffuser Necklace!

Another great Gift Idea for a teacher, party hostess, bus driver, day care provider, etc is a Diffuser Necklace with a sample of Essential Oils!

Diffuser Necklaces are awesome for anyone who likes to wear a little simple jewelry or a lot of jewelry.  The great thing about them is that there are little pads that come with each necklace and the essential oil is dropped directly on those, so the essential oils do not need to be applied to the skin or clothes in order to get the benefit of the essential oils!  The desired strength of a scent and the material of the pad will determine how many drops of essential oils to use.  Since everyone is different, it is very useful to include sample packets of essential oils or a small sample bottle filled with essential oils so that the gift recipient can adjust the scent as necessary.  (Read this useful article about how scent affects the brain!)

This Christmas, I am gifting Diffuser Necklaces to the teachers in my children's classrooms.  My sons' teachers will be receiving a dram/sample bottle of Young Living's Stress Away Essential Oil.  The name says it all!  It is a wonderful smell!  My daughter's teachers will be receiving a dram of a blend of Young Living's Peppermint and Lemon Essential Oils.  It is a very uplifting and refreshing blend!  I even started wearing a Diffuser Necklace!  One day my stomach was a mess and I was tired, but I had stuff to do!  I dropped Peppermint EO on the pad, put the necklace on and got on with my day.  The scent is not overwhelming at all and the locket can always be brought up to the nose for a quick whiff.

Diffuser Necklaces come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes.  There are many available on Amazon and Etsy if on-line shopping is preferred.  I have seen bracelets too.  It is true, there is something for every price range and style!  Get some now!

My monthly promotion for December is even giving away a Diffuser Necklace for all new members who purchase a Premium Starter Kit AND for those existing members of mine who make a purchase of 190 PV or more!  They are such an easy way to start using your essential oils right away!  Contact me for more details.

Let's Learn! - Peppermint Essential Oil!

Let's learn about Peppermint Essential Oil!  Peppermint EO has so many uses!  It is not surprising that this oil is found in Young Living's Premium Starter Kit due to its versatility and popularity!

Peppermint EO comes from the plant Mentha piperita and is part of the Mint (Lamiaceae) Family. It is s hybrid of Mentha aquatica (Watermint) and Mentha spicata (Spearmint) and is indigenous to Europe and Asia. Over time it has naturalized in the United States and is found to be a bit invasive in nature, especially in the Great Lakes Region. The plant spreads quickly by underground rhizomes and is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions. You may even have some growing in your yard! I know I do! Some notable relatives in the Mint Family are fragrant herbs used in cooking such as Basil, Oregano, Rosemary, Lavender and Thyme - all which are quite powerful essential oils too!

Peppermint contains a large amount of the natural constituent Menthol. The menthol provides the Peppermint flavor and scent as well as the numbing affects of Peppermint EO. In a previous post (Tame Those Cravings) I linked a couple supporting references for how the scent of Peppermint may potentially curb appetites and trigger a sense of satiety. The Peppermint scent is also invigorating and energizing! Wheeling Jesuit University also performed a study which indicated that the Peppermint scent helped to reduce fatigue and increase alertness. Peppermint is also known to have a positive effect on digestion and stomach discomfort. The University of Maryland Medical Center discusses how Peppermint may be used to help support healthy digestion.

Personally, I have used Peppermint EO in many different ways. Rubbing Peppermint EO diluted in a carrier oil onto my temples helps keep my head feeling good, clear and alert. Putting a single drop of Peppermint EO in my drinking water energizes me, calms bouts of gas and promotes healthy digestion. Applying Peppermint EO diluted in a carrier oil onto my stomach steadies an upset stomach and has allowed me to get on with my day instead of being stuck in the bathroom! I have even used Peppermint EO while baking. Add one or two drops to chocolate brownie or cake batter for a mild and minty flavor. Delicious!

The other day I had to attend an elementary school function. Unfortunately my stomach was not cooperating. I had gas and was quite lethargic. Fortunately I had my Peppermint EO nearby! I applied it to my stomach and added a drop to my water bottle. Within a few minutes I was feeling much better and ready to go into public!

Looking for a non-chemical way to repel spiders and other unwanted insects? Another way that I have used Peppermint EO in the home is by making a spider repellent spray! Mix in a spray bottle half water and half witch hazel and add several drops of Peppermint EO. Spray around windows and doors weekly or monthly depending on need and season. Completely safe to use around babies which is comforting when the medical industry warns of the negative side affects of chemical pesticides and insecticides used in the home. Read this CNN article from September 2015 or this EWG report also from September 2015.

Needless to say, I love my Peppermint EO and use it alot! What is your favorite way to use Peppermint EO?

Let's Learn! - Lemon Essential Oil

Let's learn about Lemon Essential Oil!  Talk about a versatile oil!  A must have for everyone!

Lemon Essential Oil comes from the rind of the lemon fruit from the tree Citrus limon.  I found a wealth of information on the Purdue University Horticulture Website concerning Citrus limon.  Lemon EO contains the naturally occurring constituent limonene.  Limonene is colorless and is the main main odor constituent of the Citrus family.  Dr. Axe did a great write up on Lemon Essential Oil complete with resources. (I guess you can say I'm feeling a bit lazy today, and why try to redo something that has already been done well?)  Young Living recommends Lemon EO as a dietary supplement.  It is also found in many of YL's essential oil blends (such as Thieves EO) and wellness products (like NingXia Red).

I have used Lemon EO in numerous ways.  I first began experimenting with Lemon EO while cleaning.  I was impressed at its ability to cut through the grease and stickiness!  It is also great in drinking water.  Warm or cold water, Lemon EO is great to help promote wellness!  The light refreshing flavor is perfect any time of day!  I've even made a lavender and honey lemonade with it!  (I'll post that recipe eventually!)  I've also used Lemon EO as part of a detox bath to encourage a healthy body.  As I experiment with essential oils, I'm sure I'll find so many more ways to incorporate Lemon EO into our everyday life!

How could I forget that one of my most favorite ways to use Lemon EO is cleaning my fresh fruit and veggies with it!!!  Read "The Best Way to Clean your Fruits & Veggies".  I was seriously sooo excited and impressed with the results from this!  You HAVE to try it!!!

How do you like to use your Lemon EO???

WEEKEND OILY TIP! - DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!

It's the holiday season!  Christmas parties every weekend, family gatherings galore, and travel.  Lots of travel.  Lots of sleeping in hotels, spare rooms, your niece or nephew's bedroom or maybe even the rec room or basement!  AH!  You want to be comfortable wherever you sleep right?  You don't want a funky smell keeping you or your kids up all night, no one will be happy the next day.  This is the season for enjoying your time with others, not dreading it!  So what if your sister didn't get a chance to sterilize the room you will be sleeping in?  She probably had lots of other things to do to ensure you have the perfect family party!  Don't get frustrated with your friends and relatives for not being you!  Bring your diffuser and your essential oils and quit worrying about the sleeping arrangements!  (Because sleeping arrangements are definitely the most worrisome to me, especially when you have three children to keep happy!)

When you are packing up all your gear, DO NOT forget to put one or two of your diffusers in your bag or your kids' bag.  If you're traveling alone or sharing one bedroom with everyone in your family/group then one diffuser is plenty.  If you have children and they are sleeping in a separate room than you, you might want to make sure to bring a diffuser for them too!  Especially if your little ones are used to a diffuser running in their bedrooms at home.  The more you can make the room they will be sleeping in seem more like home, the more pleasant of an experience it will be for everyone!  Luckily many of the diffusers are small (yet mighty) and can easily fit into a suitcase or duffle bag.

Young Living offers many different diffusers.  I have three of the Home Diffuser!  Needless to say, I'm a big fan of that one!  There is light that can used as a night light or turned off.  The diffuser can run on a continuous setting that will last about 3-4 hours or it can run on an intermittent setting, 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off, that will last about 5-6 hours.  A few other Young Living diffusers that would be great for traveling are the Dew Drop Home Diffuser, the USB Orb Diffuser and the Travel Fan Diffuser.  After looking into the Travel Fan Diffuser while writing this post, I am totally ordering one!  It can run on AA batteries and will run as long as the batteries allow it or it comes with an A/C adapter for use in a standard wall outlet!  No need for water, so you don't have worry about spilling or having your kids accidentally knock it over!  There is a pad that you place inside of the Travel Fan Diffuser.  Drops of essential oils can be placed on the pad.  You can control how strong of a scent you want based upon the number of drops placed on the pad and you can use whatever essential oil you want!  Since it can run on batteries you can even use it in your car while you're traveling!  I'll probably use the Duracell rechargeable batteries that we already have.  I'll bring the charger for those batteries too, which again is small.  I'm excited about this!

Now for the essential oils.  I actually just bring everything that I have!  You never know what might come up while you are gone.  But if you are trying to minimize, then I would suggest the following five oils.   (Use Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint individually or combined for an amazing wellness trio!)
  1. Lavender EO - may be calming and promote sleep, may help a runny nose
  2. Lemon EO - is fresh and detoxing
  3. Peppermint EO - may help when you are clogged up, may reduce fatigue
  4. Purification EO - purifies the air, reduces odors
  5. Thieves EO - cleans the air, reduces odors, may promote wellness
I guess if you are really crunched for space, then just bring your Thieves Essential Oil.  It will help to keep you all healthy, it is a fantastic cleaner (even cleans the air!), it smells great, and if someone does start feeling sicky, if used properly, it is safe for ingestion.  I definitely don't leave home without my Thieves EO and diffuser!

So do you think that you are ready to tackle the holidays away from home???  I know that we will be ready!  (Especially after I order that Travel Fan Diffuser!)  Let me know if you have any questions!

LET'S LEARN! - DiGize ESSENTIAL OIL

Today, let's learn about DiGize Essential Oil!  DiGize EO is a Trademarked blend of Young Living's.  It is known to support overall wellness.

Ingredients
Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) leaf oil

Within the ingredients listed above are naturally occurring constituents like menthol, citrol, and zingiberen.  Per the Medical Dictionary of Merriam Webster, Menthol is a crystalline alcohol (C10H20O) that occurs especially in mint oils, has the odor and cooling properties of peppermint, and is used in flavoring and in medicine (as locally to relieve pain, itching, and nasal congestion).  Citrol or Citral is an unsaturated liquid isomeric aldehyde (C10H16O) of many essential oils that has a strong lemon odor and is used especially in perfumery and as a flavoring, according to the Medical Dictionary of Merriam Webster.  The same dictionary defines Zingiberen(e) as a liquid sesquiterpene hydrocarbon (C15H24) constituting with bisabolene the chief component of ginger oil (Zingiber officinale).  So this blend may help when you're stuffed up, provides an intense lemon scent and is useful when your belly is turning!

I have used DiGize EO in a few different ways.  The first way that I used DiGize EO was adding a drop to my tea.  WOW!  The smell was quite powerful!  But the taste wasn't strong.  Odd.  Next, I rubbed it (with Peppermint EO and a carrier oil) on my rockin n rollin tummy one morning after a long night of drinking.  All I'm saying is that I didn't have to spend the whole day sitting in the bathroom anymore!  I reapplied a couple times throughout the day and managed to have an enjoyable day with my Grandma, cousin visiting from Japan and my three young children. (Here is my post about that...) Most recently I have been applying DiGize EO to my toes in the morning and before bed.  The toes (and finger tips) are the Vita Flex Points for your sinuses.  Let me say that whatever was trying to brew up and cause me discomfort didn't last long!  What a relief!!!
